This weeks Tuesdays with Dorie recipe was chosen by, Karina of The Floured Apron

Nick and I love cheese. Especially cheddar. He suggested I split the dough and do three different types of cheddar.

We went and picked out these three different cheddars:

Once out of the oven we held a tasting.

The Cahill’s Porter Cheddar was ok, an aquired taste or perfect for the beer lover in your family. Next was the Vintage Irish Cheddar, it didn’t really stand out, it kind of melted into the scone. Although the last cheese, the 2 Year Aged Cheddar was our favorite. This cheese held up in the scone and had a sharp cheddar bite to it.  By far the best part of this study, was nibbleing on each with a nice cup of warm tea.

Love your idea of trying different cheddars!

I thought my own scones were not quite cheddar-y enough — I guess I should have used a really sharp cheddar. Thanks so much for the information and the great pictures.

Wow! Three different cheese?!! That’s fantastic.

Sure, the aged cheddar must be the best :-) , great picture and it’s a must to serve a cup of tea with them.

Three different cheeses, one marbled with porter? I’m jealous! I went with an aged cheddar too – just enough bite to really stand out in these. Great job.

I just looked at your post and just had to stop and stare at the cheese! I love cheese- great idea about testing different kinds. All of the scones look delicious!

Great post! I just love it when people perform culinary experiments like this one. I also used a sharp cheddar, but that’s because I only buy really sharp cheddar, and we could taste it in the scone, but it did not overwhelm.

kim Says:

mmm, i think the cheeses by themselves look better than the scones;) (but i am biased against scones!) great post!

Erin Says:

That looks like so much fun to try all of those cheeses! I love cheese, and the ones you tried sound so good!

Wow three different cheeses! Your scones look delicious!

Linda Says:

i’m a total cheese fiend…the cheeses you selected sound unbelievably good…sounds like you had an enjoyable time with your scone tasting!

Dolores Says:

Fascinating study…a really neat way to take this assignment in a different direction.

I find that the Cahill Porter tastes like dark-chocolate and beer laced cheddar to me… odd, but not unpleasant. I’ve never tried your second selection, but it doesn’t surprise me that Shelburne Farms was the winner.

Rebecca Says:

Now, this is my kind of study. Mmmmmmmm. ;)

Shari Says:

Wow, I love your taste test! Great job!!

Cecilia Says:

You are a dedicated baker! Since I’ve graduated from college, I haven’t had ready access to a proper cheese shop, so I’m sort of jealous of you. Tasting all of those cheeses must have been so much fun. Great job!

Mari Says:

Love the cheddar experiment!
